Someone emails a label shop and asks, "How much for custom labels?" No dimensions. No quantity. No substrate. No colour count. The estimator can't answer — not because they're stalling, but because the question, as asked, has no answer. A 2×3 inch label in one colour on paper stock at 50,000 pieces and a 4×6 inch label in six colours with foil at 500 pieces aren't the same product with different prices. They're different manufacturing jobs that happen to both be called "a label."
That's the honest answer to how much do custom labels cost: it depends on five or six variables that interact, not one number a shop can quote off the top of its head. Quantity Is the Biggest Lever: Why Per-Label Cost Drops as Volume Climbs
Quantity does more to the per-unit price than any other variable, and it does it non-linearly. A run of 500 labels and a run of 50,000 labels of the identical design can differ by several multiples in cost per label — not because the material costs that much more, but because fixed costs get divided across more or fewer units.
Every label job carries costs that don't scale with volume: the time to set up the press, the cost of any plates or dies made specifically for that job, the waste generated while the press comes up to registration and colour. Colour Count and Plate Cost: The Flexo Math Behind the Number
In flexo printing, every colour in the design requires its own plate, mounted on its own press station. More colours means more plates to make, more time to mount and register them, and more waste while the press dials in registration across all of them before it prints a saleable label. This is arguably the single most misunderstood driver of custom label pricing — buyers see "six colours vs. two colours" as a minor design choice, but on a flexo press it's a structural difference in setup cost.
Here's a worked example with round, illustrative numbers to show the mechanism (not real market pricing): say a shop configures its press at a $150/hour loaded rate, plates run $50 each, and a job needs four colours. That's $200 in plate cost before a single label ships, plus the press time spent bringing four stations into registration — call it 20 minutes of makeready at that hourly rate, or $50, generating maybe 200 labels of waste in the process. On a 2,000-label order, that $250 in setup cost alone adds $0.125 to every label before ink, substrate or margin are even factored in. Cut the colour count to two and the plate cost halves, the makeready time typically shortens, and the per-label number drops accordingly.

Substrate: Why Material Is Priced by the Thousand Square Inches
Material is the most intuitive cost driver but still trips people up, mostly because of the unit it's priced in. In the U.S., label substrate is typically priced by MSI — thousand square inches — not by the roll or the linear foot. That matters because label size and substrate choice interact directly: a larger label, or a heavier film versus a basic paper stock, consumes more MSI per label and therefore costs more per label, independent of colour count or quantity.
A simple illustrative example: if a 3×2 inch label uses 6 square inches of material, 1,000 labels consume 6,000 square inches — 6 MSI. At a hypothetical $0.08 per MSI, that's $0.48 in material for the whole run, or roughly half a cent per label. Move to a 4×6 inch label and the MSI consumption per thousand nearly quadruples, and so does the material line of the quote — before anything else about the job has changed. Filmic or foil-laminate substrates carry a materially higher per-MSI cost than uncoated paper, which is why the same label design can price very differently depending purely on what it's printed on.
Die-Cutting, Tooling and Finishing: The Shape Tax
Every label shape that isn't a plain rectangle requires a die — a tool cut to the exact outline of the label — and that die is a fixed cost the same way a plate is. A custom die shape (a bottle-neck label, an odd contour, a multi-panel booklet label) costs more upfront than a standard rectangle or oval pulled from stock tooling, and that upfront cost amortises across the run exactly like plate cost does: divided by a lot of labels, it disappears; divided by a few hundred, it's a real line item.
Finishing — lamination, foil stamping, embossing, a peel-and-reseal layer — adds cost in a similar way: some of it scales with quantity (the material and pass time), and some of it is closer to a fixed setup (tooling for embossing, for instance). When a converter quotes a "custom label," the shape and finishing choices are doing as much work on the final number as the print itself.
Short Runs and Digital: Why the Math Changes Below a Few Thousand Units
Everything above assumes flexo, where fixed plate and die costs dominate short-run pricing. Digital label presses — LEP (liquid electrophotographic, e.g. Indigo-class equipment) and UV inkjet — change the equation because they eliminate plates entirely, which is why they tend to win on price at lower quantities.
The two digital processes cost differently, though, and it's worth knowing which mechanism you're paying for. LEP presses typically charge on a per-impression "click" basis — a flat charge per label regardless of how much ink the image actually uses, because the cost model is built around impressions, not ink volume. UV inkjet, by contrast, scales with measured ink coverage — a mostly-white label with a small logo costs less to print than a dense, full-bleed graphic, because the ink laid down is what's actually being metered, plus a typical surcharge for white ink and the slower print speed it requires.
Digital doesn't make the pricing math go away — it just moves the variable from "how many plates" to "how many impressions" or "how much ink." The math is different, not simpler.
