The RFQ that won't sit still
A converter gets a spec sheet for a 3.5" x 5" wrap label, four spot colours plus a solid white backer, on a 4,000-piece order that the customer says will probably reorder at 2,000-3,000 every quarter. The shop has a CI flexo press and a UV inkjet engine sitting twenty feet apart on the same floor, and the estimator has to decide which one prices this job — today, and again at reorder, when the quantity might land somewhere completely different.

Why UV flexo and UV inkjet price on completely different mechanisms
The two processes can produce label quality that looks nearly identical to a customer holding the finished piece under store light. But underneath, they are not variations on the same cost model — they are two different cost models entirely.
UV flexo is a fixed-cost-then-marginal-cost structure: you pay for plates and a makeready run before you print label one, and the marginal cost per label afterward is low and driven mostly by substrate and ink laydown. A flexo quote is a stack, and every layer in the stack is a real, separately-priced input:
- Press speed by colour count. More stations and more colour separations slow the achievable running speed, which raises the per-hour cost allocated to each label.
- Per-colour plate cost. Each separation needs its own plate. A four-colour job carries four times the plate cost of a one-colour job, amortised across the run length.
- Makeready waste. Getting the press registered, inked, and running to spec burns substrate and time before a single sellable label comes off — and that waste cost gets spread across the run, so it hits short runs harder than long ones.
- Die amortisation. The cutting die is tooling, not consumable; its cost is spread across the units it produces, which is part of why flexo rewards volume and reorders.
- MSI substrate pricing. U.S. label substrate is priced by MSI (thousand square inches), so material cost scales with label size and web width, not just piece count.
- Hourly rate plus overhead loading. The press's loaded hourly rate — labour, depreciation, overhead — gets divided across the labels the press produces in that hour.
Worked example, round numbers only: say plates for a 4-colour job cost $80 each ($320 total), makeready burns $40 in waste and time, and the die is already amortised from a prior run. On a 4,000-piece order, that $360 in fixed cost alone works out to $0.09/label before a drop of ink or a square inch of substrate is counted. - Ink coverage, measured directly from the artwork. The RIP (or the estimator, using coverage software) calculates roughly what percentage of the label area is inked, by colour channel, and cost scales with that percentage — a label that's 80% solid colour costs more in ink than one that's 15% coverage, even at identical dimensions.
- A white-ink surcharge. White underprint or a full white backer (as in our RFQ example) is typically priced separately and at a premium, because white ink is laid down heavier and often requires an extra pass.
- A speed penalty for heavy coverage. Some UV inkjet configurations run measurably slower under heavy, multi-pass coverage (like solid whites or dense process colour), which pushes cost up further on jobs that look "simple" but are ink-heavy.
Because there's no plate or die to amortise, UV inkjet's cost per label is far flatter across run length than flexo's — the same coverage costs roughly the same whether you print 500 or 5,000, which is exactly why short runs and fast-turn reorders tend to favour it.
