The quote that didn't add up
An estimator gets a rate sheet back from the LEP press rep: so many cents per metre run. Fine — except the quote template on the shared drive is built around cost per thousand labels, because that's how every flexo job in the shop has always been priced. The instinct is to eyeball it, round generously, and move on. Why LEP presses charge by the metre, not the impression
Toner-based digital presses in the HP Indigo family (liquid electrophotographic, or LEP) don't charge the way a desktop printer does, and they don't charge the way flexo does either. A flexo press's real cost driver is the plate set, the makeready, and the run-rate — costs that are largely indifferent to how much ink actually lands on the substrate. An LEP press instead bills by the length of substrate that passes through the engine: a click charge per metre (or per linear foot, depending on the vendor's convention), independent of image coverage and largely independent of color count, because the ink stations don't consume plates or physical media the way flexo does.
That's the mechanism worth internalizing: the LEP click charge is a function of how much web moves through the press, not of how much ink sits on it. Converting a per-metre click rate into a per-label cost
The conversion has two moving parts: repeat length (how much web the label consumes in the direction of travel) and lanes-across (how many labels sit side by side on the web width). Multiply those together and you know how many metres of substrate one finished label actually costs — which is what the click charge is really billing.
Here's a worked example with round numbers, built to teach the method rather than assert a real rate:
- Repeat length: 100 mm (0.1 m) per label, in the direction of web travel
- Lanes across the web: 3
- Illustrative click rate: $0.20 per metre (a placeholder for teaching purposes — real LEP click rates are tiered, volume-negotiated, and vary by press generation and contract; never plug a number you haven't confirmed with your own press rep)
To produce 1,000 finished labels at 3-up, the press needs to advance:
1,000 labels ÷ 3 lanes = 333.3 metres of "label-lengths" per lane 333.3 × 0.1 m repeat = 33.3 metres of substrate run
At the illustrative $0.20/metre rate: 33.3 m × $0.20 = $6.67 in click cost per 1,000 labels, or $0.00667 per label.
Change the repeat length to 150 mm and the same lane count, and the metres-run figure rises proportionally — 50 metres instead of 33.3, and the click cost rises with it. Add a fourth lane across and the click cost per label drops, because more labels ride on the same metre of web. That's the whole mechanism: repeat length and lanes-across set how many labels you get per metre; the per-metre rate turns that into a cost. The per-metre click cost is one line item, not the whole quote.
